Construction theme birthday party
For Cameron’s first birthday it was pretty obvious we were going with a construction theme! Kyle is a heavy equipment operator and when Cameron was an infant we pretty much bought every item of clothing with dump trucks, front-end loaders, backhoes and bulldozers on it.
I knew I wanted his first birthday to be big! The first year feels like the greatest accomplishment. At the same time, very bitter sweet knowing our days together were coming to an end as I returned back to my 9-5 job in the digital marketing world. (See my tips for returning to work after maternity leave)
The invitations
As a former graphic designer, I love creating custom invitations; it’s my favourite thing to do. I organized a quick little photo shoot with a toy (this is one of Kyle’s toys from when he was a kid) and a pair of Oshkosh overalls. Using an online template with Vistaprint, I created these invitations for the big day.
The cake
Thank god, my sister in law is amazing with cakes! I don’t know how she does it, but they are incredible. She also created the one for my baby shower (Blog post to follow).
She made one smash cake and one dessert cake for guests to enjoy. My friend Kelsey made gluten free cupcakes of the same theme.
Balloons
I recommend placing your balloon order a few days in advance. The day of the party, we went and picked them up and they were ready to go.
The lunch menu
We went with a basic backyard bbq. We have hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and drinks. All the food came from Costco and we still had TONS of leftovers.
We finished the afternoon with the big cake smash, he loved it! A quick bath and it was naptime for our little birthday boy.
Once everyone left I could finally relax with my family and relatives and a few glasses of wine. Cheers to surviving the first year of parenting!
